Annie Kate Hairston Matthews, was born in Stokes County, NC, on December 25, 1912 to Burl and Jennie Hairston.  She was the twelfth child of thirteen born to her parents.  Also, her death marks "THE END" of that generation here on earth.  Her parents and siblings were a very close group, loved each other dearly, and had constant reunions, particularly when they gathered to help cure tobacco in NC.  It was such a joy being with all of the aunts, unlces, cousins and grandchildren.

Mama and Daddy met on a bus excursion to Roanoke, VA.  Daddy often told us the story of meeting that beautiful Hairston lady from NC... and he went on a search!!.  John Albert Matthews and Annie Kate were married in March 1934...sixty nine years if union.  From their union was born, Barbara Ann and Evelyn Jacquelyn.  They built their "little house on the hill" and raised their girls.  Daddy preceded Mama in death in August 2003.

Mama joined Mt. Zion very soon after her arrival in VA.  She was a dedicated member of the church choir and the Willing Workers Club for many years.  Her favorite pastimes were puzzles, volunteering, family gatherings, and shopping.  She was always willing to help others.  She was known for her friendliness, laughter, and annoyance of anything that "she did not like"...it showed!

She is survived by: her two daughters, Barbara Ann and Evelyn Jacquelyn (Arthur); grandchildren, Constance (Marvin), Dudley (Margaret), Ronald, Sydne (Lewis), Arthur H., II and Troy; great grandchildren, Erica, Tennille (Frederic), Marcie, Tia, and Ebony.  There are many nieces, nephews, great-great grandchildren, and in laws who also grieve Mama's transition, but are certain that God has the healing touch.  She will rest with God and his angels.

Mama could be counted on to support her family with love; she was right there taking care of every issue that arose. And,as she needed family more and more during her aging health difficulties, the family was absolutely at her beck and call.  ALL of her needs were met; and ALL of her possible wishes were granted within our earthly control.  She has been the QUEEN of our hearts and souls, but there is no doubt in the minds of close family members left behind that she was satisfied with the care and love received by all.  We honor God's itinerary for eternal life.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Mt. Zion United Holy Church in Martinsville, VA with Elder LaVarra Hagwood, officiating.  Burial will follow in Carver Memorial Gardens.
