Audrey Lightfoot Hairston, departed this life peacefully at
Roanoke Memorial Hospital with family members near on Thursday,
June 23, 2011. She was born April 15, 1928 to the late John
Carter and Dorothy Hairston Lightfoot. In addition to her
parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James A.
Hairston; her son, Robert L. Hairston; three sisters, Veronica
Moore, Elizabeth Vaughn, Ramona Reid and two brothers, Joseph and
Matthew Lightfoot.
She attended Henry County Training School as a member of the
class of 1947. She was a good student and loved to play
vplleyball. She left school to help her family at Jobbers
Pants Factory #2. She was a hard worker and was given the job
of supervisor of 35 employees. In 1973 she along with her
husband, became the co-managers of Paradise Inn. Although her
husband James always took credit for the food, she was the one who
cooked. She helped him run the store of over 25 years.
She joined Mt. Zion at an early age and often spoke of how she
and her sisters and brothers walked to Sunday school and
church. Audrey worked with the missionary society and she and
her husband helped the kitchen committee, especially with hams and
turkeys, deviled eggs and macaroni and cheese.
She was dedicated to family and did all she could to make sure
her family needs were met. Audrey considered everyone family,
especially her nieces and nephews. She loved them as if they
were her own. She would often sit with her mother-in-law,
Mrs. Mary Hairston and her sister-in-law, Annette Hairston when
they were ill. If there was anything she could do to help
someone, she would.
She leaves to cherish her memory: a devoted daughter-in-law,
Lois Hairston, of Martinsville, VA; three granddaughters, Carla
(William) Shepherd, of Roanoke, VA; Alison (Stacy) Stockton, of
Dumfries, VA and Adrienne (Steven) Hutchings, of Stafford, VA; a
