Dr. Patricia Bowles Scales, daughter of the late Thomas and Irene Bowles, departed this life on Thursday, October 28, 2010.  She was a native of Martinsville, VA and spent the later portion of her life and career in Maryland.  An outstanding educator and business woman, Dr. Scales leaves a devoted husband, Vesharn; sisters, Alease Loggins, Shelia (Jimmy) Wright, Nita (J. C.) Hall; one brother, Thomas Bowles, and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Dr. Scales received her formal education in the Martinsville City School System, graduating from Albert Harris High School.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia State University, a Master of Arts from Trinity University and Doctorate from George Washington University.  In addition to a stellar career as an educator in Virginia, North Carolina and the District of Columbia, Dr Scales was President and C E O of Liberty Construction, Inc. of Washington, DC for twelve years delivering many multi-million dollar projects that improved the lives of citizens in the District of Columbia.  Always willing to give of her time and energy, she was involved in numerous community and educational organizations; including the YMCA, Red Cross, Bowie State University Foundation Board, Prince George's Chamber of Commerce, District of Columbia Contractor's Association, Mathematics-Science Project for Middle School Students in Virginia, and Africare - an effort to assess the conditions of refugee camps.  Dr. Scales was a Life member of the National Council of Negro Women and she co-chaired, with her husband, a major capital stewardship project for Shiloh Baptist Church in Washington, DC that raised two million dollars. Dr. Scales was named to America's Top Black Business and Professional Women and Who's Who among Black Americans and a member of Phi Delta Kappa Professiona Organization.

Pat, as she was affectionately known, possessed a warm spirit, a compassionate heart, and optimistic view on life.  A Deacon, an educator, a business woman, a devoted wife, a loving sister, a matriarch and role model to so many she will be sorely missed.

In honor of her life, the family has established the Dr. Patricia Bowles Scales Schlorship Fund to carry on her legacy of commitment to education and the community.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 6, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Mayo Missionary Baptist Church in Ridgeway, VA with Rev. Dwight Mack, officiating.  Burial will follow in Carver Memorial Gardens in Martinsville, VA.
