Jesse J. Martin, Jr., was born to the late Nannie Kate and Jesse Martin, Sr., in Axton, VA on October 21, 1944. He was the 8th of sixteen born to that union. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one daughter, Donna, and a brother, Melvin Martin.
Jesse was educated in the Pittsylvania County School System and graduated from Southside High School in Blairs, VA. He immediately entered in the United States Army and served honorably, receiving a purple heart for his service in Vietnam.
Following his discharge, he returned to Axton, met and married Isalene Walker in June 1969. To this union were born three daughters: Donna Martin, Mona (Stephen) Larkins and Adrienne Martin (Randy) Leftwich; and two grandchildren, Ebony Martin and Dorian Larkins.
He worked at Tultex 35 years until 2000. Following this he worked briefly at Pillowtex before joining Henry County Public Schools as a bus driver.
He joined Christ Temple Holy Church around 1980 and served in virtually every capacity since then to include Deacon, Sunday School superintendent, teacher, counselor, usher, prison ministry, senior choir, lawn care supervisor, men's fellowship, boys club sponsor, noonday prayer warrior and barber for the Hairston Home ministry.
He spread the good news of Gods love wherever he went and/or worked conducting bible study with the other bus drivers, taking care of the widows in the community and the list goes on. He had a profound love for God, his family and for helping others. He was patient and kind, with a loving smile and wonderful sense of humor.
He leaves to cherish his memory fourteen siblings, Calvin (Eva) Martin, Willie Mae Eggleston, Shirley Martin, Virginia (Charles) Gravely, Annie Adams, Dorothy (Herbert) Strange, Edith Jane (Chauncey) Stone, Samuel (Joyce) Martin, Naomi Tucker, Marvin (Bonnie) Martin, Howard (Wanda) Martin, Helen (Jones) Giles, Leroy Martin, Bernard (Ailene) Martin and Leroy Martin; several in-laws, Mabeline Williams, Dolyn (Janice) Walker, Agatha (Robert) McFarland and Audrey Fodrell and a host of nieces and nephews.
