Jesse Matthew Brooks, 75, of Martinsville, departed this life on
May 12, 2011 at his home. He was born February 15, 1936 to
the late Richard Goode Hylton and Vergie Brooks Hylton. He
joined Alpha Faith Temple in 1996 and remained a very faithful
member until his health failed a few months ago. He held many
positions at Alpha Faith including, Vice chairman of the Deacon
Board, President of the van ministry, choir member, building
committee member, and assistant treasurer of the central region of
the United Way of the Cross Churches. He was well liked by
many young people and adults alike. He will be greatly missed
by the church and community.
Jesse was a lifelong masonry contractor starting his career upon
being honorably discharged from the United States Army in the early
1960's. He received his masonry training from his uncle, Rev.
Elijah
Niblett and co-worker, Stafford Jones.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bettye Moon Brooks,
and one brother, Richard Hylton, Jr.
He leaves to mourn his loss: his wife, Lisa J. Brooks, of
Martinsville, VA; one son, Vincent Craig, of Roanoke, VA; two
sisters, Faye (John) Serrano, of Greensboro, NC; and Judy
Black of Black Mountain, NC; one brother, Willard Hylton, of
Martinsville, VA; three step-daughters, Amalene King and MeShawn
Hairston, both of Martinsville, VA; and Tamara Hairston, of
Collinsville, VA; two aunts, Josephine (Elijah) Niblett and Lillian
Brooks, both of Martinsville, VA; one grandchild, six
step-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren, three loving
nephews, one niece and several cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 16, 2011 at 11:30 AM
at Hines Funeral Services Chapel with
Bishop Waverly Cousin, officiating. Burial will follow in
Carver Memorial Gardens in Martinsville, VA.
