John Lester Scales, 77, was born in Ridgeway, VA.  He departed his life on January 9, 2011 in Queens, NY following a long term illness.  During his prolonged illness he never complained.  John was given all types of medical attention to prolong his life, yet still the Lord called him home.  God set him free.

John received his education in the Henry County Public Schools.  During his early childhood, he worshipped God at Mayo Missionary Baptist Church.  He attended Virginia State College and later enlisted in the United States Army and served his country.

He moved to New York and lived there for many years.  In time, he was united in marraige to Laura Redd.  John later retired as a motorman from New York City Transit Authority.  John was a hard working man until his illness took affect.  He was always ready and able to help those in need.  All who knew him, knew he always lived the life of the fisherman, party man and he always won the prize of best dancer; he would make you laugh until you cried.  He also loved baseball and football.

Leaving behind to cherish his memory are: his wife of 55 years, Laura Scales, of the home; one son Daniel (Peggy) Scales, of Queens, NY; one grandson, Daniel Scales, Jr., granddaughters, Icelean, and Gina Scales and great-granddaughter, Yvanni Rhymer, all of Queens, NY; two sisters, Cordelia Phillips, of Martinsville, VA;  and Ada Reynolds, of Ridgeway, VA; three brothers, Harry Scales, of PA; Thomas D. Scales and Timothy A. Scales, both of Ridgeway, VA; and a host of in-laws, nieces nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday, January 14, 2011 at 1:00 PM at Mayo Missionary Baptist Church with Dr. Thurman O. Echols, Jr., officiating.  Burial will follow in the Redd Family Cemetery in Martinsville, VA.
