On Tuesday, December 7, 2010, Mr. John Mitchell, Sr., died at Stanleytown Health and Rehab Center. After a lengthy illness he went home to rest with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Chrust.
John was born March 23, 1934 in Martinsville, VA to the late Joseph and Gladys Mitchell. His parents preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by: brothers, Dana Mitchell and Joe B. Mitchell, Sr., and sisters, Virginia Hairston and Ressie Anthony.
He worked at American of Martinsville for over 35 years and was a self-employed contractor. His works can be seen in different areas of Martinsville.
He was a member of High Street Baptist Church and past member of Sons of Solomon Lodge # 111 F A A Masons.
He leaves to mourn and cherish his memory: his wife, Bernice P. Mitchell of the home. To this union five children were born; three daughters, Teresa (Thomas) Hamlett, of Martinsville, VA; Karen (Leon) Bernardo, of Savannah, GA; and Robin (Howard) Scott, of Bowie MD; two sons, John (Karen) Mitchell, Jr., of Reidsville, NC; and Roderick K. Mitchell of Laurel, MD. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Donte (Nathlie) Brown, Imeshia Brown, Jalena Spikes, April Mitchell, Jasmine Scott and Deandra Bernardo, Three great-grandchildren: Jaden Brown, Zahir and Mikhail Brown; two sisters, Mary Smith, of Martinsville, VA; and Josephine Dillard, of Chicago, IL; and one brother, Tyler B. Mitchell, of Martinsville, VA; one cousin, Alberta Wilson, of Martinsville, VA. He also leaves to mourn: many nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 1:00 PM at St. Paul High Street Baptist Church with Rev. William A. Shackleford, Sr., officiating. Burial will follow in Carver Memorial Gardens in Martinsville, VA.
