Ms. Joy Larnette Terry Spencer, was born August 1, 1975, to Carnathus and Gyrlie Williams Terry. She was one of four siblings along with Cassandra, Candace, and Jr. She was loved very much. "J. T." or "Diva J. T." as friends and family lovingly called her, also had a special relationship with two cousins: Chrishelle and Shenita Williams who she also called her sisters. You rarely saw one without the other.
Joy was raised in Henry County and graduated from Laurel Park High School, where she was a cheerleader and participated in many other activities. After graduating high school, she attended Patrick Henry Community College, and to further her education, she was attending Danville Community College at the time of her demise. She was a faithful member of Bethel United Way of the Cross Church and she worked with the Youth for Christ Choir as their musical technician. Earlier years as a child and teenager, she sang with the Little Folks for Jesus Choir, the Ensemble Choir and was also a member of the Usher Board.
In 1997, she married Corey Spencer and to this union three sons were born: Javion, Alontae and Sharrod. Thes boys were the JOY of her heart. Though Corey and Joy's union didn't last, the love for the children kept them friends. J. T. raised her boys with a stern hand and a loving heart. As the mother to three little men, she moved to Cascade and her children were active in football and basketball. Joy supported them wholeheartedly and was even elected as team Mom. She loved her children dearly. She later met a special friend, Jaime Redd, who loved her and the boys.
The "Diva" will be missed by those who knew and loved her. She had a big heart and could sometimes be a bully if you messed with someone she loved.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Charlie and Ruth Terry.
She leaves to cherish her memories: three sons, Javion, Alontae, and Sharrod, all of Axton, VA; parents, Carnathus and Gyrlie Terry, of the home; two sisters, Cassandra (Darin) Wilson, of Martinsville, VA; and Candice Terry, of Richmond, VA; a brother, Carnathus, Jr., of Eden, NC; two special sisters, Chriselle and Shenita Williams, of Cascade, VA; a god-daughter, Samyia Hairston, of Eden, NC; paternal grandparents, Willie and Leona Williams, of Cascade, VA; a special aunt, and uncle, David and Maggie Williams, of Cascade, VA; and Mrs. Stacy Williams of Danville, VA; and a host of aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 12:00 Noon at Bethel United Way of the Cross Church with Bishop John A. Campbell, Jr., officiating. Burial will follow in the Terry Family Cemetery in Axton, VA.
