She was born May 14, 1913, in Henry County to Charlie M. and Mollie Griggs Hairston.  She received her early education in the public schools of Martinsville.  She married Bishop Harry C. Eggleston in 1931 (53 years of marriage).  They had four children to this union.  In 1945, she co-founded Shiloh Way of the Cross Church of Christ.  The church began in the home of Burgess and Ruby Hairston of the Carlisle Community.  Currently the church is located on Brookdale Street.  Millie was the oldest member of Shiloh holding the distinction of Mother Eggleston; which was graciously fitting for her.  She served as the president of the Missionary Department; national treasurer of the Missionary Department of the Way of the Cross Churches, International; and participated in the Adult Choir.

She leaves to cherish her memory:  two daughters, Lorraine E. (Odell) Grant and Shelia S. Fuller, both of Martinsville, VA; Millie truly loved her four grandchildren, Timothy (Vicki) Grant, of Winston-Salem, NC; Sharon Grant, of Charlotte, NC; Melissa Fuller, of Martinsville, VA; and Marcus Grant, of Toano, VA;  She spoke highly of her great-grandchildren, Aja Grant and Niya Grant, of Winston-Salem, NC;  She treasured her nephew, Major (Loretta) T. Hairston, of Wilmington, DE; three great nieces, Kelly (Amandla) Abdellatif, of Murphy, TX; Heather Hairston, of Wilmington, DE; and Shelia (Earl) Bruce, of Wilmington, DE; three great-great nephews, Azaan Abdellatif. Samuel Abdellatif, Shimeles Abdellatif; two great-great nieces, Katherine Hairston and Aza Abdellatif; foster daughter, Lena Stone, of Myrtle Beach, SC and godchild, Alventis Gravely, of Axton, VA.  Her brothers, Charles and Obadiah Dillard, both of Martinsville, VA.

Millie Eggleston was preceded in death by her husband, Bishop H. C. Eggleston; one son, Sammy Clay Eggleston, one daughter, Erma Laverne Eggleston, one sister, Sally Aiken and three brothers, Major Hairston, Sr., Charlie Hairston and Willie Hairston.
