Obie Dillard Hairston, 90, departed his earthly life on Saturday, January 8, 2011.  He was born to the late Sidney L. and Barner Hodge Hairston on January 26, 1920 in Henry County, VA.  Four brothers; Samuel, George, James and Leonard Hairston and four sisters, Dora Hairston Ware, Ruth Martin Hodge, Mary Ellen Hairston and Kate Jamison Dixon preceded him in death.

He was a member of Moral Hill Missionary Baptist Church.  He enjoyed attending the worship services and the fellowshipping with family and friends.

In his latter years, Obie was lovingly cared for by his brother, sister-in-law and their children.  He especially enjoyed family and friends when they came to visit.

Obie was a self taught skilled carpenter and found it possible to build or repair anything he desired.  His carpentry skills were demonstrated as he worked for Hooker Furniture, American Furniture, Morris Novelty and East End Remodeling Company.

He enjoyed working outside from sun up to sun down, especially in his garden.  One of his greatest pleasures was sharing the abundances of his gardens with countless family and friends.

Obie leaves to cherish his memory:  one loving and devoted brother, Rodney "Snow" Jerome (Ida) Hairston, of Martinsville, VA; a longtime special friend, Lula B. Watkins and her children whom he adored; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at ll:00 AM at Moral Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Axton, VA.  Dr. Thurman O. Echols, Jr., will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Hairston Family Cemetery in Axton, VA.
