On Saturday, December 4, 2010, Rev. James A. Nowlin of 49 Tanks Prestige Avenue, went home peacefully to be with the Lord.  James a native of Patrick Springs, VA, was born to the late Samuel Thomas and Stella Sheffield Nowlin on January 24, 1917.  He joined New Hope Baptist Church, in Patrick Springs, VA at an early age.  He met and married Lucille Preston, and moved to Henry County, where he joined Mount Olive East Christian Church and served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Elder and on the Christian Men's Fellowship before he was called to the ministry in 1959.  Rev. Nowlin was licensed to preach at the Piedmont Tri State District Convention in August 1961.  He served as pastor of West Liberty Christian Church, Woolwine, VA for twelve years, Iron Belt Christian Church, Stuart, VA for nine years and Meadow Christian Church for thirty one years.  He loved the Lord and was faithful in his service to the church and the Piedmont District.  He loved to read and study the Bible.  He was also retired from DuPont with 32 years of service.  Rev. Nowlin was active in the community and served for many years as Horsepasture District Representative on the County of Henry Planning Commission.  He also received the NAACP Award for Outstanding Service.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Lucille Preston Nowlin; one grandchild, Alicia
Nowlin Snead; three brothers Walter, Samuel and Charlie Nowlin; and one sister, Nancy France.

He leaves to cherish his memory: two daughters, Levonia N. Gravely, and Brenda N. Turner, both of Winston-Salem, NC; two sons, James "Tommy" (Ruth) Nowlin, of Chesterfield, VA; and Michael Nowlin, of Martinsville, VA; one sister, Mattie Tatum, of Patrick Springs, VA; five grandhcildren and 3 great-grandchildren.  He also leaves a grandson-in-law:  James A. Snead, who was a buddy, friend and devoted caregiver.

Rev. Nowlin fought a good fight and kept the faith to the very end.  To God Be the Glory!

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at 12:00 Noon at Mount Olive East Christian Church with Dr. Kenneth Davis, officiating. Burial will follow in Carver Memorial Gardens.
