Salem Payne, 74, of 2373 Stoney Mountain Road, Martinsville, Virginia departed this life on Sunday, November 22, 2009 at his home.  He was born May 10, 1935 in Pittsylvania County, VA to the late Patsy Fuller and the late Raife Payne.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Payne.

Salem was retired from American of Martinsville with 40 years of service.

Those left ot cherish his memory, include: three daughters, Rochelle (Marvin) McKenzie, of Chatham, VA; Jeanette Preston, of Roanoke, VA; and Vanessa Hairston, of Pennsylvania; four sons, Christopher Payne, of Roanoke, VA; Sherman (Margaret) Payne, of Martinsville, VA; Mark (Katrina) Payne, of Homerville, GA; and Dennis Carter, of Martinsville, VA; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, November 27, 2009 at 1:00 PM at Hines Funeral Services Chapel.  Rev. Jimmy L. Tarpley, will officiate.  Burial will follow in the Dickerson Family Cemetery, in Axton, VA.
